The Innocents Abroad, 1869 First Issue – $400.00
The Innocents Abroad, 1st Edition, 1st Issue with missing page numbers on page xvii. Bound in three-quarter Morocco over burgundy cloth. The leather is cracked and worn. The front hinge leather is fully cracked, while the rear is worn. Chipping at the corners and ends. In the front, the first free endpaper does not open fully down to the gutter between it and the pastedown. It is adhered to the pastedown, near the gutter. The next page is similarly adhered to that page. So, it seems apparent that some repair has been done. The front hinge is secure. The inner rear hinge is cracked, but the exterior leather is holding it well.
The tissue guard is clean though it is loose over about an inch and a half at the top. There is some scattered soiling, but generally the text is clean. There is a jab “hole” to the front edge of the text block that extends in about 3/8”.
I have tried to provide pictures showing all the above.
A flawed, but complete and intact copy of the increasingly hard to find 1st Issue.
