The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County

$250.00

Author: Mark Twain

This book contains a work by Mark Twain and one by Brett Harte in one volume. Binding is contemporary half-leather with ridges, cloth boards.
The Mark Twain title is Mark Twain’s Celebrated Jumping frog of Calaveras County, and Other Sketches. With The Burlesque Autobiography and First Romance. London: George Routledge & Sons, The Broadway, Ludgate. <No date, 1872>. BAL 3338.

The Brett Harte title is Sensation Novels Condensed. London: John Camden Hotten 74 & 75 Piccadilly <no date, 1871>.

BAL reads, “Reprint with the possible exception of “Cannibalism in the Cards,” pp. 171-184, here in its earliest located book appearance. The piece was first published in The Broadway (London), Nov. 1868; collected in Sketches, 1875. There is a possibility it had prior book publication in an unlocated edition of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County advertised by Routledge in Ath April 9, 23, 1870. Such an edition could not have contained the Burlesque Autobiography which was first published in March, 1871.”

It is now known that the 1870 Routledge edition exists and did include Cannibalism in the Cars, so this is all reprint material. Still a very early and interesting edition of Jumping Frog.

Three printings are noted in BAL. This is the first of the three.

Outer leather hings are worn. Binding is sound. The text is browned, but otherwise clean. Nice book.
