Description

On the excellent website www.twainquotes.com, there is a section on Newspaper Articles. Under the heading of Virginia City Territorial Enterprise 1862-1868, it is stated:

“Today very few copies of the Territorial Enterprise from Mark Twain’s days exist. Much of Twain’s writing for the Enterprise survives only as undated clippings from his personal scrapbooks or as reprints from contemporary newspapers of his time.”

Further, The Ballad Infliction is indicated to have been printed in The Territorial Enterprise in November, 1865. The text of The Ballad Infliction is provided with the source notation:

“[reprinted in Mark Twain’s San Francisco, edited by Bernard Taper, (McGraw Hill, 1963), p. 128-130; reprinting from Californian, Nov. 4, 1865.]”

TwainQuotes also indicates that The Ballad Infliction appeared in The Californian on November 4, 1865.

For sale here is what appears to be a complete newspaper (16 pages), The Californian, dated November 4, 1865 and containing The Ballad Infliction. I have provided images of several of the pages, including the Table of Contents showing, “Mark Twain” on the Ballad Infliction and the page with the text of the article. Also, there is a picture of the blue cloth-covered binder that houses the newspaper.
