Mark Twain Statuette by the Sculptor Amici
$40.00
From on-line searches that left me a bit confused as to the actual sources of each tidbit (Wikipedia, Inside the Vatican Magazine being the main two), I gleaned the following:
The statuette of Mark Twain by the sculptor Amici is two feet tall and is said to be “a good-natured impression of the cantankerous wit, who called the cafe his favorite in Rome ‘because it had nothing by Michelangelo.'” It was made from a model Twain posed for at the cafe. The statuette was displayed within the cafe in a high-ceilinged room with red damask drapes, alongside other works of art. The cafe almost closed several times over the years due to financial matters. It may have closed permanently in 2025. I am unclear as to whether the Twain statuette can still be seen there or not.
The post card shows “Federico Gubinelli Proprietario.” In a separate search that gave Enciclopedia su Roma as the source, I learned that Federico Gubinelli was proprietor from 1905 to 1954. This does not help much with dating the post card.
Though not in very clean condition, it is an interesting and uncommon post card.
