Description

This card is from a set of 50 released by Duke and Sons Tobacco Company around 1888.The “cards” were small 16-page booklets with thin cardboard covers. The set is called “Histories of Poor Boys who have become Rich and Other Famous People” and is identified as (N79). This set included everyone from Horatio Alger (who authored books championing the poor boy who became rich) to Thomas Jefferson, Buffalo Bill, P. T. Barnum, and of course to Mark Twain. Many other writers, poets, and actors were included. The front cover shows a full color head & shoulders portrait of the individual. The back includes a picture of something important in the individual’s life history. The interior pages give a somewhat detailed biography. The interior paper pages and the thin cardboard covers makes these little booklets quite susceptible to damage, making nice copies hard to find. In addition, the single staple on the spine that holds the booklet together can rust and damage the paper.

This copy is in quite nice condition overall. The bottom left corner of the front cover has a scuff. There is a tiny nick at the top of the rear cover. On close inspection, the staple has some rust, but not bad at all. The corners are just a little bit rounded. There is a small brown stain on the bottom edge of the front cover.

About 2 13/16″ x 1 7/16″.
