Author: Mark Twain

1st Edition, 1st state of all BAL points except the rare repeated lines on pages 351 – 353 and “Truex Inde” as there are no ads in the back of this copy. American Publishing Company 1873. Black cloth.

The black cloth is split along the bottom half of the front hinge and a couple of inches down from the top hinge. There is a short split at the bottom of the rear hinge and about a one inch split near the top of the rear hinge. The cloth is worn away at the corners and along most of the front edges of the boards. There is wear to the cloth along the top and bottom edges of the boards as well, but not as much as on the front edges. The front inside hinge is cracked at the top quarter and bottom quarter of its length, but holding pretty well along the middle portion, about half of the total length, so there is play at top and bottom. The hinge is secure, but requires a degree of careful handling. The rear hinge, on the whole, is stronger than the front, but the paper is cracked along the top half with a little bit of play. The text block is sound and clean. Overall,a Good or better copy of the 1st state, except for the rare repeat lines and “truex inde”.
