1st edition. Hillcrest Edition. 1903. Refer to the article The Primary First Editions of Mark Twain by Kevin Mac Donnell in Firsts Magazine, July/August 1998. The article explains that four essays are printed for the first time in Volume 23 of various collected editions of Twain’s works from the American Publishing Company. The sheets were printed on various papers and issued with each of the editions sold between 1899 and 1903. These included the Autograph Edition, the Author’s Edition, the DeLuxe Edition, the Hillcrest Edition, the Royal Edition, the Riverdale Edition, and the Underwood Edition. The edition offered here is the Hillcrest Edition, which is the same edition as the copyright deposit copy.
